China congratulates Kazakhstan on the smooth referendum for its new constitution, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian at a press briefing in Beijing on Monday.

Kazakh voters approved a new constitution in a referendum on Sunday, recreating the office of vice president following the formation of a new parliament and placing greater emphasis on social development, exit polls showed.

"China congratulates Kazakhstan on the smooth completion of referendum for its new constitution. As a friendly neighbor and permanent comprehensive strategic partner, China is glad to see Kazakhstan maintaining long-term stability and security, and social progress and prosperity. We believe that under the leadership of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the people of Kazakhstan will make new and even greater achievements in the nation's construction, and fulfill the goal of building a Just Kazakhstan. China always attaches great importance to developing relations with Kazakhstan, and stands ready to work with Kazakhstan to implement the important consensus of the two presidents, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields, and push China-Kazakhstan relations to constantly step up to new levels," Lin said.

Chinese stocks closed mixed on Monday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.26 percent to 4,084.79 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.19 percent higher at 14,307.58 points.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, gained 1.41 percent to close at 3,357.02 points.

The ChiNext Index, together with the Shenzhen Component Index and other indices, reflects the performance of stocks listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange.
