Various grand celebrations and vibrant activities have been held recently across southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region to mark the 67th anniversary of the democratic reform that ended feudal serfdom in the region.
On March 28, 1959, people in Xizang launched the democratic reform, freeing a million serfs. In 2009, the regional legislature designated March 28 as the day to commemorate the emancipation of the serfs.
In Lhasa, the regional capital, a chorus competition kicked off at the Lhasa Normal University on Friday, drawing nearly 2,000 participants from 10 teams of diverse ethnic backgrounds.
The event featured traditional and contemporary songs celebrating unity, development, and cultural heritage.
In Shannan City's Kesong Community, known as the first village in Xizang to implement democratic reform, residents gathered for a vibrant ethnic unity-themed celebration.
Local performers captivated audiences with traditional folk dances and songs paying tribute to the new era, followed by visits to an exhibition hall, which chronicles the region's profound journey from feudal serfdom to a thriving, modern society.
In Dingri County of Xigaze City, villagers donned festive attire to perform traditional dances and compete in lively games such as tug-of-war and arm-wrestling.
The celebrations carried special significance this year, as the area continues its remarkable recovery from the 6.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Dingri last year.
"This year, I plan to expand our family teahouse by adding a few more rooms, diversify our income sources, and take our life to a whole new level," said Norbu, a local resident.
In Nagqu City, locals participated in cultural performances centered on the building of the community of the Chinese nation, alongside revolutionary song competitions.
"Over the years, our hometown has undergone tremendous changes, with many roads built, our lives growing more prosperous, and various beneficiary policies being effectively implemented. Now, we are living an increasingly happy life," said Tsring Yonten, a local resident.
