U.S. dollar ticks down

The U.S. dollar weakened in late trading on Tuesday.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, fell 0.12 percent to 99.857 at 15:00 (1900 GMT).

In late New York trading, the euro advanced to 1.1574 dollars from 1.1549 dollars in the previous session, and the British pound climbed to 1.3251 dollars from 1.3241 dollars in the previous session.

The U.S. dollar bought 159.73 Japanese yen, higher than 159.63 Japanese yen in the previous session. The U.S. dollar was up to 0.7988 Swiss francs from 0.7977 Swiss francs, and it slipped to 1.3899 Canadian dollars from 1.3914 Canadian dollars. The U.S. dollar rose to 9.5065 Swedish kronor from 9.4355 Swedish kronor.

U.S. stocks ended mixed on Tuesday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 85.42 points, or 0.18 percent, to 46,584.46. The S&P 500 added 5.02 points, or 0.08 percent, to 6,616.85. The Nasdaq Composite Index increased by 21.512 points, or 0.10 percent, to 22,017.849.

Six of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in green, with communication services and energy leading the gainers by going up 1.04 percent and 0.78 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, consumer staples and consumer discretionary led the laggards by dropping 1.76 percent and 0.91 percent, respectively.
