China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region has become a vibrant haven for migratory birds as thousands of flocks return to the wetlands and valleys flanking the Tianshan Mountains.
In Xinjiang's Tekes County, more than 10 kinds of migratory birds have arrived at the Karatokay Lake, including herons, redshanks and northern lapwings. The birds stand motionless on the shoal or stroll leisurely through the shallows, forming a vivid tapestry of wild natural beauty.
In Beitun City, the Fengqing Lake wetland has welcomed tens of thousands of migratory birds, including cormorants, mallards and red-crested pochards.
Some of the birds will breed the next generation here, while others stop briefly to replenish their energy before continuing their northward migration.
Xinjiang is an important stopover for migratory birds along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, the Central Asian-South Asian Flyway, and the West Asia-East Africa Flyway. Each year, more than 1 million migratory birds representing approximately 300 species stop in the region to rest, feed and breed.
