Iraq and China can expand collaboration on clean energy projects, especially solar energy, according to Goran Rasheed Muhamad, director of the Foreign Affairs Office in Iraq's Sulaymaniyah Province.

Muhamad, who is in northwest China's city of Xi'an for the Global Mayors Dialogue held from Monday to Wednesday, told China Global Television Network (CGTN) that Iraq is in need of energy transition support from a country like China, noting a lack of power in most parts of his country.

"Iraq is a country which is in need of an energy transition. We are in need of the solar power for the time being, as we have shortage in power stations. And I think that's why Iraq is pushing towards finding new sources for the country to get the solar power, to get the clean power. As we have a very long summer (times), we can get benefit from the sun to get the solar power," he said on the sidelines of the event.

The Iraqi official underlined the great potential for mutually beneficial energy cooperation between the two countries.

"Iraq is trying most of the time to cooperate with countries like China as a great country. We can get as much as benefit from each other as we have oil and you have power," said Muhamad.

The U.S. Federal Reserve on Wednesday decided to maintain its target range for the federal funds rate unchanged at 3.5-3.75 percent as high energy prices added inflation pressures.

This is the Fed's third straight rate hold this year, matching market expectations.
