China firmly supports Cuba in safeguarding its national sovereignty and security, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Thursday, in response to a media question about the U.S. move to ramp up sanctions against Cuba.

"China has made its position clear regarding the relevant executive order issued by the U.S. side. I would like to reaffirm hereby that the U.S. has intensified illegal unilateral sanctions against Cuba, seriously infringing upon the rights to subsistence and development of the Cuban people and seriously violating the basic norms governing international relations," said Lin Jian, the spokesman, at a press conference in Beijing.

"China firmly supports Cuba in safeguarding its national sovereignty and security, resolutely opposes interfering in Cuba's internal affairs, and urges the U.S. to immediately stop the blockade, sanctions and any form of coercion and pressure against Cuba," he said.
