Spain completed the evacuation and transfer of the final group of passengers and crew members from the hantavirus-hit cruise ship MV Hondius on Monday, as the vessel departed the Spanish island of Tenerife and set sail for Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
The final group of 28 evacuees, including passengers and crew members, disembarked after the ship docked at the Port of Granadilla on Tenerife and were subsequently transferred to Tenerife South Airport for a flight to the Netherlands, while another 26 crew members on board the vessel continued their voyage to Rotterdam.
Spanish Health Minister Monica Garcia said that the vessel docked for around one hour following a recommendation by Spain's Maritime Authority due to strong winds and rough sea conditions in the port area, in order to ensure the safety of passengers and emergency personnel, and the entire evacuation operation had been carried out "under completely safe conditions."
According to Garcia, among the final evacuees were six passengers who had originally been scheduled to fly to Australia but were ultimately transferred on the Netherlands-bound flight.
She said that after all evacuees leave the island of Tenerife, the relevant Spanish authorities will carry out a comprehensive disinfection of the areas receiving the evacuees.

Russia on Monday accused Ukraine of breaching a declared three-day ceasefire, claiming 23,802 violations across Russia's special military operation zone, while Ukraine said Russia has no intention to end the conflict.
Russia and Ukraine on Friday agreed to a three-day ceasefire and a swap of 1,000 prisoners.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Russian forces have strictly complied with the ceasefire arrangements in its special military operation zone since 00:00 in May.
Ukrainian armed formations carried out strikes using unmanned aerial vehicles and shelled Russian military positions, the ministry said in a statement.
"Over the past 24 hours, Ukrainian forces launched 12 assault attempts and conducted 767 bombardments against Russian positions using multiple launch rocket systems, field artillery and mortars. They also launched 6,905 drone strikes," said the ministry.
Ukrainian forces also targeted civilian facilities in Russia’s Belgorod Region with 18 drones, leaving two residents injured.
Meanwhile, Russian troops responded in kind to the actions of Ukrainian forces, delivering return fire on enemy multiple launch rocket systems, artillery and mortar positions, and neutralizing enemy command posts and drone launch sites, according to the Russian side. Russian air defense systems shot down 85 fixed-wing drones along the front line.
Russia did not launch any strikes from operational-tactical aviation, attack drones or missile units of Russian Armed Forces groups, the ministry said.
The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces reported 180 battles along the front line. Ukrainian forces repelled Russian attacks in multiple directions, while shooting down 1,577 drones.
In a video address on Monday night, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine is now working at full capacity on preparations to counter a possible new wave of attacks, as Russia has not yet demonstrated in any way that it wants to end the conflict.
