The rapid development of new energy vehicles (NEVs) in China has provided a feasible solution for green and low-carbon development in the Asia-Pacific region and around the globe, said participants at the 43rd APEC Automotive Dialogue.
The gathering, which opened on Tuesday in Shanghai, focuses on accelerating the region’s shift toward cleaner and more competitive mobility.
In recent years, Chinese NEV companies have increased their investments in countries such as Thailand and Mexico. Thailand, for instance, plans to strengthen its automotive supply chain and actively cultivate local suppliers to better support the development of vehicle manufacturers and auto parts companies.
"We have to develop our human HRD (human resource development) to support R and D and further standardization. At least in our future, I think that we can (enhance) our cooperation to Chinese company," said Osain Verojacha, a planning and policy analyst from Thailand's industrial economy authority.
An industry insider from Mexico emphasized that in recent years, Chinese brands have driven the growth of electric vehicle sales in the Mexican market, with an increase of over 20 percent. At the same time, the entry of Chinese car brands has also brought the North American country many innovative technologies.
"In planning for the next 20 years, we are expecting new opportunity of a Nearshoring 2.0 version to Mexico to attract more investment, especially from Asia and from China to invest in Mexico and to have the opportunity to become a faster [way] of adopting technology in the supply chain," said Gabriel Padilla Maya, general director of the National Auto Parts Industry of Mexico.
"Nearshoring 2.0" refers to what analysts say is an opportunity for Mexico to benefit from increased inbound investment amid the current global trade climate.
As for China's role, Fu Bingfeng, executive vice president of China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, said that the country adheres to the principles of adapting to local conditions and win-win cooperation, actively participating in green and low-carbon cooperation within the APEC framework to provide green travel services for consumers in the Asia-Pacific region.
"First, we will launch products that cover multi-tiered market demands and are suitable for various usage scenarios, taking into account the economic development levels and actual usage scenarios of different economies in the Asia-Pacific region. At the same time, we are also willing to share our technical experience in the field of new energy vehicles to help our Asia-Pacific partners build localized production and maintenance systems," Fu said.
