A heat wave swept Turpan City of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on Tuesday, with the temperature soaring to 60 degree Celsius in the local scenic area of the Flaming Mountain.

To help visitors cope with the heat, the scenic area has erected shade canopies and installed fans along the tour route. Free heat-relief medicine and drinking water were also provided for tourists to cool off.

In Turpan's Toksun County where temperatures topped 42 degree Celsius on Tuesday, local public security bureau activated emergency response plan for the heat wave.

Temporary "cooling stations" were set up on road checkpoints to distribute water and other cooling supplies to frontline police officers and passing truck drivers.

A whale shark was filmed swimming near a small fishing boat off the coast of Fangchenggang City in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on Monday.

A local fisherman sailing around an offshore wind power project in the waters of Beibu Gulf saw the whale shark slowly approaching his dinghy, swimming alongside it briefly before gradually swimming away.

Whale sharks have a tendency of migrating to Beibu Gulf every May and June. The area's summer fishing moratorium provides them with abundant food sources.
