NEW YORK (AP) — Ryan McMahon hit a go-ahead single in the seventh inning, Carlos Rodón combined with three relievers on a two-hitter and the New York Yankees beat the Cleveland Guardians 2-1 Thursday to salvage the finale of a three-game series that star Aaron Judge missed.

Judge missed the game due to a bruised rib on his right side that was causing shoulder pain. Later Thursday, the Yankees said Judge will be sidelined indefinitely with a stress fracture of his ribs.

The team said the three-time AL MVP was diagnosed with the stress fracture of the first rib on his right side and will need to rest and have limited activity. He’ll be re-evaluated after having additional imaging in about four to six weeks. The Yankees said in a statement that Judge is expected to return “at some point this season.”

Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a tying sacrifice fly in the fourth and started the seventh-inning rally with a one-out walk from Codi Heuer (0-1). Chisholm stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch during consecutive pitches, then scored on McMahon's single as the Yankees went on to win for the seventh time in 10 games.

Rodón allowed one run and two hits in six innings with seven strikeouts and three walks. Stuart Fairchild hit an RBI single in the fourth.

Brett Headrick (4-1) pitched the seventh, and Fernando Cruz tossed a perfect eighth. David Bednar got three groundouts for his 13th save in 15 chances.

Max Schuemann started in place of Judge and made a pair of nice plays in his first career start in right field. In the second, he charged in for a diving catch on Steven Kwan’s sinking liner and five innings later, he made a leaping catch on Brayan Rocchio in front of the fence.

Cleveland’s Slade Cecconi allowed one run and four hits in six innings.

LONDON (AP) — Anthony Head, the suave, smooth-voiced British actor known for roles in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Ted Lasso,’ has died, his family said Friday. He was 72.

Head’s daughters, actors Emily and Daisy Head, told the Press Association news agency that the actor passed away due to complications from pneumonia.

The performer became known to British TV audiences in the 1980s as one half of a will-they, won’t-they romantic couple in a series of ads for Nescafe instant coffee.

Head achieved U.S. fame as librarian Rupert Giles, mentor to the title character in the cult-favorite supernatural series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” which ran from 1997 to 2003.

He most recently played Rupert Mannion, the villainous ex-husband of Hannah Waddingham’s character Rebecca, in “Ted Lasso.”

“Our grief is far greater than the hole he has left behind, but we know his legacy will live on, in the shows he was a part of, and in the audiences that love them,” his daughters said. “How lucky we are to know we are able to watch him doing what he loved, even when he is no longer with us.”
