China's economic and trade relations with the European Union (EU) are mutually beneficial and win-win in nature, and the country has never deliberately sought a trade surplus, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said on Friday, in response to a media query about trade issues between China and the EU.

"We believe that China's economic and trade relations with the EU are mutually beneficial and win-win in nature, and that China has never deliberately sought a trade surplus. We have noticed the EU's statements about dialog and are closely watching its moves. China is ready to talk with the EU," said Mao Ning, the spokeswoman, at a press conference in Beijing.

"We hope the EU side will stick to the basic principles of a market economy -- free trade, fair competition and open cooperation -- refrain from taking protectionist measures, and work through dialog to resolve differences and address each other's concerns," she said.

Russia and Ukraine each exchanged 185 prisoners of conflict on Friday, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

Moscow brought 185 Russian servicemen back from territory controlled by Ukraine, while handing 185 Ukrainian captives over to Kiev, it said.

It added that the returned Russian servicemen are currently in Belarus receiving psychological and medical care and will later be transferred to Russia for further treatment and rehabilitation.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed on the same day the return of 185 soldiers as well as one civilian to Ukraine.
