China's top legislator meets Lao top leader

China's top legislator Zhao Leji met with General Secretary of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party Central Committee and Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith in Beijing on Friday.

Zhao, chairman of China's National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, said China is ready to work with Laos to implement the strategic consensus reached by the top leaders of the two parties and two countries, and jointly build a high-standard, high-quality and high-level China-Laos community with a shared future.

Zhao also expressed the NPC's willingness to deepen multi-level and multi-field cooperation with the Lao National Assembly, and conduct exchanges on the rule of law and legislative work to provide legal guarantees for the modernization of the two countries.

Thongloun said the Laos-China community with a shared future will continue to grow no matter how the international landscape evolves.

He congratulated China on its great achievements under the leadership of the Communist Party of China and expressed the hope that the two legislatures will enhance exchanges on legislation to contribute to the development of bilateral ties.

Thongloun laid a wreath at the Monument to the People's Heroes on Tian'anmen Square on Friday morning.

Russia and Ukraine each exchanged 185 prisoners of conflict on Friday, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

Moscow brought 185 Russian servicemen back from territory controlled by Ukraine, while handing 185 Ukrainian captives over to Kiev, it said.

It added that the returned Russian servicemen are currently in Belarus receiving psychological and medical care and will later be transferred to Russia for further treatment and rehabilitation.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed on the same day the return of 185 soldiers as well as one civilian to Ukraine.
