China's top legislator Zhao Leji held talks with speaker of the Parliament of Singapore Seah Kian Peng in Beijing on Friday.

China and Singapore jointly celebrated the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations last year, and the important meetings between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong charted the course forward for bilateral relations, said Zhao, chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee.

Zhao said that China stands ready to work together with Singapore to deliver on the important common understandings reached by leaders of the two countries, and keep advancing the all-round high-quality future-oriented partnership between the two countries.

China is willing to make joint efforts with Singapore to deepen high-level political mutual trust and firmly support each other on issues of core interests and major concerns, Zhao said, calling for efforts from both sides to strengthen the alignment of development plans, expand cooperation in fields such as artificial intelligence, the digital economy, clean energy and sci-tech innovation, and carry out high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, while enhancing mutual understanding and close bonds between the people through more exchanges, intensifying multilateral cooperation and practicing true multilateralism.

Zhao said China's NPC is ready to strengthen exchanges and deepen mutual learning in legislation and supervision with the Parliament of Singapore, so as to provide legal guarantee for high-quality cooperation between the two countries.

Zhao said he welcomes Singapore's parliamentarians to join a seminar for members of parliaments of ASEAN countries organized by the NPC in China.

Zhao also briefed on the outline of China's 15th Five-Year Plan for national socioeconomic development in the 2026-2030 period.

Seah said Singapore adheres to the one-China principle, noting that China's 15th Five-Year Plan will provide important opportunities for Singapore.

Singapore is willing to work with China to enhance cooperation in various fields including the economy and trade, artificial intelligence, the digital economy, green development and improvement of people's lives, Seah said, noting that both countries are committed to upholding multilateralism and free trade.

He said his country is ready to actively promote in-depth development of relations between ASEAN and China amid the complex and volatile geopolitical situation.

The Singaporean Parliament hopes for more friendly exchanges and deeper communication in legislation and other fields with China's NPC, so as to contribute to promoting growth of bilateral relations, Seah said.

The United Kingdom's economy contracted in April, with the gross domestic product (GDP) falling 0.1 percent month on month after growing 0.3 percent in March, according to data released Friday by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The main driver of the negative growth was cited as a 0.2 percent contraction in services.

According to the ONS, one of the biggest contributors to the decline in services was a 9.1 percent fall in sports, amusement and recreation activities -- the largest negative contribution from a single industry to services output and real GDP growth.

Some of the sector's decline was attributed to the war in the Middle East, as the cancellation of various sporting events in the Middle East affected the output of U.K.-based companies, said the ONS.
