Heavy rain flooded parts of southern China over the weekend, forcing school closures in Guangdong Province and prompting emergency rescues in neighboring Guangxi, local authorities said.

In Lufeng city in Guangdong, torrential rain from Saturday night to Monday morning brought an average of 329 millimeters of rainfall, according to local meteorological authorities.

Several villages reported severe flooding. In Xiaqianliao village in Nantang town, floodwaters submerged streets to depths of nearly 1.5 meters in some areas.

Firefighters were deployed on Sunday night to search for trapped residents and evacuate them by boat to temporary shelters.

Footage showed firefighters transferring a resident with a leg in a plaster cast, along with a dog, from a flooded house to safety.

By 11:00 on Monday, more than 50 residents had been evacuated from Xiaqianliao village, with operations continuing.

All kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, and off-campus training institutions across Lufeng were suspended on Monday.

Meteorological authorities forecast heavy rain through June 19, warning of flash floods, landslides, and urban and rural waterlogging.

In neighboring Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, two construction workers were rescued after being trapped by rising river waters.

Local fire authorities said heavy rain across much of Guangxi led to torrential conditions, with some areas recording extreme rainfall.

On Sunday, firefighters in Hezhou city received reports that water levels in the Baini River section of Renyi township rose quickly, trapping two workers building a river embankment on a bridge.

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene and used an inflatable boat to reach the workers after assessing water conditions and safety risks, bringing them to safety.
