Compatriots across the Taiwan Strait have the unshirkable duty to jointly safeguard national sovereignty and maritime rights and interests, Chen Xi, spokesman for the Ministry of National Defense said at a press briefing in Beijing on Tuesday.

The China Coast Guard (CCG) conducted law enforcement patrols in the relevant waters earlier in June after Japan and the Philippines unilaterally announced the launch of maritime delimitation negotiations in the waters east of China's Taiwan Island.

The CCG's patrols are fully justified and necessary, Chen said in response to media reports that Taiwan's defense affairs authorities described the patrols as "a provocative act" and "cognitive warfare".

"Taiwan is part of China, and China has an exclusive economic zone and continental shelf in waters east of the Taiwan Island. The China Coast Guard's law enforcement patrols are legitimate, necessary, and brook no interference. Both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to one China and it is the bounden duty of compatriots on both sides to jointly safeguard national sovereignty and maritime rights and interests. But Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party authorities not only responded passively [to Japan and the Philippines' provocative actions], but also distorted the facts and acted retrogressively. Such behavior, which betrays its roots, is utterly despicable," Chen said.

The Qinghai provincial military district and the Qinghai Armed Police Corps on Tuesday dispatched personnel to carry out search and rescue operations and other tasks after a 6.3-magnitude earthquake rocked Haixi Mongolian and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in northwest China's Qinghai Province.

Following the disaster, the Haixi Detachment of the Qinghai Armed Police Corps immediately activated its emergency response plan, racing against time to mobilize rescue teams and dispatch them to the epicenter with a full set of disaster relief supplies to carry out frontline earthquake relief operations.

The Haixi military sub-district of the Qinghai provincial military district promptly activated its emergency response mechanism, dispatched an emergency command team to the front lines, and mobilized 60 local militia members from nearby areas to conduct disaster assessments and provide medical assistance.

One person had been confirmed dead and eight others injured in the quake as of 23:00 Tuesday, rescuers said.

The quake struck at 17:06 Tuesday at a depth of 10 km, with the epicenter at 37.80 degrees north latitude and 95.56 degrees east longitude, said a report issued by the China Earthquake Networks Center.
