China stands ready to contribute to maintaining the authority of the United Nations by advancing the implementation of its Global Governance Initiative (GGI), said Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing on Wednesday.

Speaking at a press conference to present a white paper titled "More Just and Equitable Global Governance: China's Principles, Proposals and Actions," Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, responded to a media query on how China supports the United Nations in playing its role as the resurgence of the law of the jungle is posing a threat to the international order.

"More than 80 years ago, seeing the law of the jungle going rampant around the world and wreaking havoc on humanity, the international community drew hard lessons from two world wars and chose to embrace multilateralism and founded the united nations. Today, multilateralism appears to be failing, it is not because the United Nations has become irrelevant, but precisely because the authority and the role of the United Nations have not been respected or fully utilized. The law of the jungle is resurfacing, not because the UN Charter is outdated, but exactly because the charter has not been effectively observed and safeguarded," said Wang.

Wang said that in the face of mounting global challenges, the top priority is to fulfill the obligations enshrined in the UN Charter, and China is ready to work with other countries to reinvigorate and strengthen the United Nations.

"Facing emerging global challenges, the pressing priority now is to fulfill the obligations enshrined in the UN Charter, uphold sovereign equality, observe the international rule of law, and oppose power hegemony and bullying. We should actively support the United Nations to play its central role, and through the platform of the United Nations, we should build global consensus, coordinate global actions and tackle global challenges to gradually eliminate the deficiency and deficit of global governance. Meanwhile, we need to keep abreast of the times and accelerate the reform of the United Nations, actively respond to the demands of developing countries, increase the representation and voice of Global South countries, invigorate the United Nations and make it more effective," he said.

"As the first country to sign the UN Charter, China shoulders its unshakable responsibility and is ready to advance the implementation of the Global Governance Initiative to uphold the UN authority and work with all countries to revitalize and strengthen the United Nations," said the Chinese foreign minister.
