China firmly supports Cuba in safeguarding its national sovereignty and security and opposing external interference, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said at a press briefing in Beijing on Thursday.
Guo made the remarks when asked to comment on the sanctions imposed by the United States on five Cuban companies and one individual, suspected of generating revenue for the Cuban government.
In response to the sanctions, Cuba's Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez said the U.S., under Secretary of State Marco Rubio, is tightening its economic siege on Cuba because, in the face of brutal U.S. aggression and collective punishment, Cuba's economy has proven to be stronger, more capable, and more effective than expected.
"China opposes illicit unilateral sanctions that have no basis in international law and urges the U.S. to immediately stop its blockade and any other forms of coercion and pressure against Cuba and stop infringing upon Cuban people's right to survive and thrive. China firmly supports Cuba in exploring development paths suited to its national conditions, safeguarding its national sovereignty and security, and opposing external interference," Guo said.
