The 6th Chinese Peacekeeping Helicopter Contingent in Abyei, a disputed border region between Sudan and South Sudan under United Nations protection, on Saturday successfully completed a material delivery mission in support of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA). The Chinese peacekeeping helicopter unit delivered 3.8 tons of food, water and daily supplies by air, restoring a vital supply route to the mission area after heavy rains cut off all overland transport.
In recent days, continuous heavy rainfall in the the mission area has caused severe damage to roads leading to several remote outposts, rendering overland resupply impossible. Consequently, the daily provisions of other peacekeeping contingents in the area are facing critical shortages. The Chinese peacekeeping contingent received an order from UNISFA’s aviation department and mobilized to carry out the airlift. UNISFA later noted the unit’s role in ensuring supplies reached the mission area.
