Millions of Iranians took to the streets of the capital city Tehran on Monday for the funeral procession of Iran's late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, paying their respects to the late leader and vowing to carry forward his legacy after Khamenei and his four family members were killed in a U.S.-Israeli strike in late February.
The solemn procession followed a two-day mourning ceremony, drawing people from across the country who gathered to pay their final respects to the leader.
"He was our comrade-in-arms, our leader, the leader of the Islamic world, and the leader of the resistance. Today, the resistance and the entire Islamic world are mourning their leader," said a mourner called Mohammad.
For many in the crowd, Khamenei represented more than a political figure, but also a role model.
"He was a legend. He is the role model for all Muslims around the world. Personally, for me, Mr. Khamenei is the most important role model in my life," said Zeynab, another mourner.
"We will continue his path until the very end. We will stand firm like a mountain. We fear nothing," said Sakineh, a third mourner.
According to Iran's official plan, another funeral procession for the late supreme leader will be held in the central city of Qom on Tuesday, and on Wednesday, Khamenei's body will be transferred to the Shiite holy cities of Najaf and Karbala in Iraq for further rites.
He will be laid to rest in the northeastern Iranian city of Mashhad on Thursday, which the government has declared a day of national mourning.
Ali Khamenei's son, Mojtaba Khamenei, was selected as Iran's new supreme leader in March.
