China firmly supports Cuba in safeguarding its national sovereignty and opposes external interference in Cuba's development, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Wednesday, in commenting on the United States' recent escalation blockade and sanctions on Cuba.

The U.S. on Monday announced new sanctions against 10 Cuban entities, including Cuba's Ministry of Tourism and state-owned entities in foreign trade, energy and maritime transport.

"We have stated China's position on this issue on many occasions. The U.S. has imposed a comprehensive blockade and illegal sanctions on Cuba for more than 60 years, causing profound suffering to the Cuban people. More recently, the U.S. has escalated its blockade and sanctions, seriously affecting Cubans' basic livelihoods and drawing widespread concern from the international community," said Lin Jian, the spokesman, at a press conference in Beijing.

"The U.S. should heed the just calls of the international community, immediately end its blockade and coercive pressure against Cuba, and stop infringing upon the Cuban people's right to subsistence and development. China firmly supports Cuba in safeguarding its national sovereignty, opposes external interference, and stands ready to work with the rest of the international community to uphold international fairness and justice," Lin said.
