Indonesia quake kills at least 40, tsunami warning lifted

The death toll from a 7.7-magnitude earthquake off Indonesia’s Flores Island rose to 40 on Saturday, with 50 people injured as of 18:30 Jakarta time, Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency said.

Suharyanto, head of Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency, said about 2,000 residents had moved to nearby evacuation shelters.

Exclusive footage filmed by China Central Television (CCTV) in Maumere showed patients receiving treatment in makeshift beds and tents outside a hospital, while emergency responders cleared rubble from a damaged waiting area at Laurentius Say Port.

The China Earthquake Networks Center said the quake struck at 05:58 local time, at a depth of 20 km. It was felt across several towns on Flores Island, sending residents into the streets.

Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency reported several aftershocks of magnitude 5 or higher, including one measuring 6.2. A tsunami warning issued after the main quake was later lifted.

The Chinese Consulate General in Denpasar said three Chinese tourists suffered minor injuries while evacuating after the earthquake. One struck their head against a wall, while the other two suffered minor lower-back strains. All were in stable condition.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are frequent.

Emergency crews in central China's Henan Province are sparing no efforts to seal three river embankment breaches caused by heavy rain from the residual vortex of Typhoon Dolphin, with one gap already plugged and two others still being tackled.

Widespread downpours began on Monday, pushing multiple rivers running through the province to high levels.

On Wednesday night, a breach more than 40 meters wide occurred on the Beiru River embankment in Jiaxian County, Pingdingshan City. The gap was sealed the following night.

On Thursday, a 10-meter-plus breach appeared on the Qingyi River in Xuchang's Yanling County.

Later that night at around 23:00, a breach emerged on the east bank of the Jialu River in Chuanhui District, Zhoukou City. Fast currents expanded the gap to more than 110 meters.

Sealing efforts at both remaining sites are well underway.
