Blue Jays center fielder Brett Bateman injured while making sliding catch against Orioles

BALTIMORE (AP) — Toronto's last-ditch push for a playoff spot is encountering quite a few roadblocks.

Already dealing with health concerns for both Dylan Cease and Vladimir Guerrero Jr., the Blue Jays lost rookie outfielder Brett Bateman on Monday night when he was hurt making a sliding catch in the second inning.

Bateman held onto the ball to retire Baltimore's Rece Hinds, but his slide left a divot in the ground — not a great sign — and he rolled over awkwardly after making the catch. Bateman was able to walk off the field, but very slowly, and he was replaced the next time Toronto was in the field.

The Blue Jays entered the day three games behind the Chicago White Sox for the final wild card in the American League. Guerrero was out of the lineup because of back trouble. Starting pitcher Trey Yesavage was limited to two innings in his first game back from knee inflammation. Cease is dealing with shoulder issues and it's not clear when or if he'll make another start this season.

Toronto acquired Bateman in the August trade that sent Kevin Gausman to the Chicago Cubs. He has hit .320 in 38 games since making his big league debut for the Blue Jays on Aug. 7.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart sustained a knee injury during his team's first series against the Los Angeles Rams on Monday night.

Dart was hurt while being pressured on third-and-8. Rams linebacker Byron Young hit Dart from the quarterback's right side, sending him into linebacker Josaiah Stewart, who undercut Dart's legs and sent him down hard onto the turf. Dart was eventually able to walk gingerly to the sideline under his own power, and he went straight into the medical tent for further evaluation.

Dart, who was 3-of-5 passing for 20 yards, then walked to the locker room. The Giants said his return was questionable.

Jameis Winston replaced Dart on the ensuing Giants drive following a three-and-out for the Rams.

Winston started two games and appeared in three for the Giants in 2025, throwing for 567 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. The 11-year veteran was drafted first overall in 2015, and has also played for the Buccaneers, Saints and Browns.
