Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said on Sunday that Iran is willing to push for dialogue between Yemen's Houthi group and Saudi Arabia in an effort to resolve the escalating conflict between the two sides.
According to Iranian sources, Baghaei made the remarks at a press conference that day.
Baghaei said that the solution to the Yemen issue lies neither in intensifying the economic blockade nor in resorting to airstrikes.
Iran holds that the Houthi group and Saudi Arabia should engage in dialogue based on the previously agreed peace roadmap, and Iran is ready to provide all possible assistance to advance this process, said the spokesman.
The latest round of conflict between the Houthi group and Saudi Arabia began in mid-July.
On July 13, Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV said Saudi Arabia launched several airstrikes on the runways of Sanaa International Airport in the Houthi-controlled Yemeni capital. The Houthi group retaliated by firing missiles at southern Saudi Arabia.
In the weeks that followed, the two sides carried out repeated attacks against each other.
On Saturday, the Houthi group claimed it had attacked an oil facility in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, using ballistic missiles and drones in response to recent Saudi strikes.
The Saudi-led coalition said the same day that the claim by the Houthi group was misleading and intended to divert attention from the losses the group itself had suffered.
