Backed by fully mechanized operations and smart drying facilities, farmers in Xinyu City of east China's Jiangxi Province are harvesting rice across 249,000 mu (approximately 16,600 hectares) of farmland to lock in a bumper autumn grain yield.
In the rice fields of Yushui District, multiple harvesters are in operation. Weather forecasts indicate a round of rainfall for the area from October 15 to 16, so farmers are racing against time to reap the mid-season rice.
"This year I have over 600 mu of mid-season rice in total, with overall growth doing pretty well. I have prepared five harvesters and plan to finish harvesting it within two days," said Liao Yongbing, a farmer in Yushui District.
The freshly harvested rice is immediately loaded onto trucks and transported to nearby drying plants as quickly as possible. This effectively mitigates the risk of sprouting or becoming moldy due to rainy weather.
"From planting to harvesting, we use mechanization throughout the entire process. Mechanization helps us save on costs. After the rice is harvested, we immediately rush to plant winter rapeseed in order to secure a double harvest from one field," said Liao.
Currently, the mid-season rice harvest in Xinyu City is nearing completion, with over 95 percent harvested.
