China looks forward to more practical measures from the Syrian transitional government to effectively address the concerns of the international community and more positive efforts in a direction that serves the interests of the Syrian people, a Chinese envoy to the United Nations said on Monday.

Sun Lei, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, made the statement at a UN Security Council meeting on the political and humanitarian situation in Syria.

"For some time, thanks to the joint efforts of the Syrian transitional government and all the parties involved, the situation in Syria has remained generally stable. Momentum toward economic recovery has continued to build, and the humanitarian situation has shown some improvement. At the same time, Syria's national development and reconstruction still face numerous daunting challenges. We look forward to more pragmatic measures from the Syrian transitional government to effectively address the concerns of the international community and more active efforts in a direction that serves the interests of the Syrian people," said Sun.

China believes that under the current circumstances, four issues in Syria deserve attention: the political transition, the terrorist threat, the economy and people's livelihoods, and sovereignty and security, Sun said.

China stresses that the Syrian transitional government should take a firm stance against terrorism and translate its political commitments into concrete actions, he said.

Six vessels came under attack on Sunday in the Strait of Hormuz and adjacent waters of the Gulf of Oman, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).

The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway between Iran and Oman that connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman, carries about a fifth of the world's oil.

According to the reports, four oil tankers bound out of the strait and one container ship entering the waterway were struck by unknown projectiles. Meanwhile, another tanker anchored near Sohar anchorage, Oman, close to the eastern entrance of the strait, was targeted in an attack by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), with local authorities assisting in evacuating the crew.

The incidents come amid escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran over control of the strategic maritime choke point. Since late September, a string of attacks on merchant vessels in and around the strait has driven casualties steadily higher, with the risks spilling over into the waters of neighboring countries including Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Oman.
