A Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Friday lashed out at certain Philippine politicians for fabricating anti-China rhetorics in efforts to reap selfish political gains, negatively impacting China-Philippine relations.

"A small number of Philippine politicians care only about their selfish interests. They are trying to gain political influence by taking an extreme anti-China position, arbitrarily engaging in military buildup and seeking power by creating the rhetoric of 'external threats,' and trading for foreign support by making a mess and stirring up troubles in the South China Sea," said Senior Colonel Chen Xi, the spokesman, at a press conference in Beijing in commenting on media reports that Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro has frequently moved to hype up the South China Sea issue and make false remarks about China.

"All such moves have directly jeopardized the Philippines' national security and people's well-being, greatly undermined regional peace and stability and shared interests of ASEAN, and have generated destructive impact on the China-Philippine bilateral ties and military-to-military relations," he said.

"Facts speak louder than words, and justice will prevail. The Chinese side remains committed to firmly safeguarding the country's national territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests, and building the South China Sea into a sea of peace, friendship and cooperation together with other regional countries," said the spokesman.

Iron ore futures finished higher Friday in daytime trading on the Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE).

The most active iron ore contract for January 2027 delivery rose 0.07 percent to close at 672.50 yuan (about 100.54 U.S. dollars) per tonne.

Iron ore futures were launched on the Dalian Commodity Exchange in October 2013 and have since become the world's most actively traded iron ore derivatives contract.

As the world's largest importer of iron ore, China opened the contract to international investors in May 2018, further enhancing its role as a key price benchmark for the global seaborne iron ore market.
