Foreign Minister Wang Yi expounded on the contributions of Chinese modernization to the world in his speech at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 79) on Saturday.

In his speech delivered at the General Debate of UNGA 79, Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, explained in detail the implication of Chinese modernization for the world, from four aspects of world peace and stability, common development, global governance and human civilization.

Noting that the People's Republic of China is to celebrate its 75th founding anniversary on Oct. 1, Wang said, "Over the 75 years, despite changes in an evolving global environment, China's choice has remained unchanged, that is, pooling all resources to pursue the people's happiness, national rejuvenation and also the progress for mankind and world harmony. While pursuing its own development, China, with a global vision, has always striven to create new opportunities for the world with its own development."

Chinese modernization will contribute robustly to world peace and stability, Wang said.

Noting that the Chinese culture values peace and the Chinese nation has no tradition of external expansion, Wang said that China is the only major country that has written peaceful development into its constitution, and the only country among the five nuclear-weapon states to pledge no-first-use of nuclear weapons.

"We are actively exploring and putting into practice the Chinese way of addressing hotspot issues, boosting the prospects for resolving the security dilemma and improving security governance, and paving the ground for conflict settlement and peacebuilding. Every step in China's development is an increase in the force for peace," Wang said.

Chinese modernization will contribute robustly to common development for all, Wang said.

"China does not only care about its own development. We are ready to develop hand in hand with all countries. By further expanding high-level opening up, we take the initiative to align with high-standard international economic and trade rules, and foster a world-class business environment that is market-oriented, law-based, and internationalized," Wang said,

Wang mentioned such Chinese efforts as granting visa-free entry to citizens of a growing number of countries, promoting high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, taking concrete steps to support the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and speeding up the support of Global South cooperation and Africa's peace and development.

Chinese modernization will contribute robustly to improving global governance, Wang said.

"China has been an abiding supporter of the UN's continued reform and development so as to usher in UN 2.0 era. We should improve and develop the international financial system in keeping with the times and make global governance more balanced and effective. The UN system needs to respond to the legitimate calls of developing countries and increase the Global South countries' representation and say," he said.

Chinese modernization will contribute robustly to the advancement of human civilization, Wang said.

"Rooted in China's vast land while drawing inspiration from the achievements of other countries and civilizations, Chinese modernization has created a new form of human advancement, and provided a new choice to other countries in exploring modernization paths. China believes different civilizations should respect and learn from one another, and jointly contribute to the progress of human civilization," he said.

China has proposed to set up an International Day for Dialog among Civilizations, calling for more people-to-people exchanges and cooperation across the world, to strengthen mutual understanding and amity among people of all countries, Wang said.

African officials on Wednesday pledged to scale up investment to accelerate development across the member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) at a meeting in Accra, Ghana's capital.

They made the commitment during the 24th Annual General Meeting of the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID), where leaders highlighted the need to expand the bank's capital base to finance transformative projects.

Ghanaian Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson stressed that timely capital payments would strengthen EBID's leverage and sustain its growth, enabling the institution to stimulate inclusive economic expansion across the region.

"Timely capital payments are critical. It strengthens EBID leverage and sustains its growth and impact across our region. Expanding our capital base is essential to strengthen our ability to finance transformative development projects and stimulate inclusive economic growth among our member states," said Forson.

EBID recorded strong achievements in 2025, with total disbursements of about 722 million U.S. dollars, up 47.7 percent from 2024. Building on that momentum, President George Agyekum Donkor said the bank remains committed to helping member states tackle poverty and close infrastructure gaps across the region.

"We aim to direct at least 63 percent of new commitments towards the private enterprises to catalyze job creation and innovation. Simultaneously, the bank would embed environmental, social and governance principles across its operations, dedicating over 41 percent of resources to climate mitigation and social inclusion projects," said Donkor.

With disbursements surging nearly 48 percent last year, EBID officials said the bank is positioned to channel more resources into private-sector growth and climate-focused projects, reinforcing its role as a driver of inclusive development across West Africa.
