On the same day, U.S. President Donald Trump was sworn into office.

According to reports, Trump stated that he hopes to visit China within his first 100 days in office and China has expressed its willingness to work with the new U.S. administration to push for greater progress in China-U.S. relations from a new starting point.

In an exclusive interview with China Global Television Network (CGTN) on the sidelines of the WEF Annual Meeting, WEF President and CEO Borge Brende highlighted that the recent phone call between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump sent a positive signal.

He said both sides recognize the broad common interests between the two countries and share a desire for global peace and economic development.

"There was a phone call between President elect Trump and President Xi Jinping of China on Saturday. I think that was a good start. I think it was important that the two leaders already started a dialog on peace and development or peace and stability, as Mr. Trump put it. And I also have seen that according to the American media, that Trump has said that he wants to visit China. So maybe there will be more dialog than competition," he said.

"There are areas where countries will compete fiercely. I think on the new technologies you will see strong competition between China and the U.S. as the two leading powers on the technology side, on artificial intelligence, on the Internet of Things, also when it comes to digital trade. Even in such a situation, I think what we saw with the call between President Trump and President Xi Jinping is that they realize both that there are common interests," said Brende.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung said on Wednesday that Seoul firmly adheres to the one-China principle, in comments made ahead of his upcoming state visit to China.

The remarks were made in an interview with China Media Group (CMG). The visit is scheduled for Jan 4–7.

"The consensus reached between governments of the Republic of Korea and China when diplomatic relations were established continues to be the fundamental principle governing our relations, and its effectiveness remains steadfast. I want to clearly state that the ROK has always adhered to the one-China principle. Maintaining peace and stability in regional matters, including in Northeast Asia and concerning the Taiwan issue, holds significant importance to us," said Lee.

"The foundational relationship between the ROK and China was established on a very principled and fundamental basis from the beginning. It is clear that the ROK government has always adhered to this position and has never wavered from it. I believe that the sound development of ROK-China relations depends on both sides fully respecting each other's core interests and being mutually tolerant of each other's positions. In this context, we will, as always, uphold the one-China principle as the Taiwan issue is China's most fundamental concern," he said.
