China's national lawmakers on Saturday started deliberating a work report submitted by the Supreme People's Procuratorate.
Procurator-general Ying Yong delivered the report at the second plenary meeting of the third session of the 14th National People's Congress.
In 2024, the top procuratorate implemented the holistic approach to national security, respecting and safeguarding human rights, fully and accurately enforcing the policy of balancing leniency and severity in criminal justice, and improving the criminal prosecution system to firmly uphold national security, social stability, and public safety, according to the report.
Over the year, 753,000 criminal suspects were approved for arrest, and 1.631 million were prosecuted, representing a year-on-year increase of 3.6 percent and a decrease of 3.4 percent, respectively, the report said.
"We handed out severe punishments for severe violent crimes. Maintaining a firm stance on strict enforcement without relaxation, we prosecuted 60,300 individuals for crimes such as murder, robbery, and kidnapping. Suspects involved in extremely heinous cases were swiftly arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law. In collaboration with public security authorities, efforts were made to resolve long-standing homicide cases. The Supreme People's Procuratorate approved the prosecution of 336 individuals for homicide cases that had remained unsolved for over 20 years, upholding justice under the rule of law," Ying said while delivering the report.
