China on Thursday called on the international community to increase investment in Libya to help the country overcome the challenges it is facing in maintaining stability.

Sun Lei, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, said at a Security Council meeting on Libya that with the support of the international community, Libya has continued to make headway in restoring peace, stability and prosperity.

However, as Libya remains entrenched in a political deadlock, with its humanitarian and economic situations facing mounting pressures, the international community and the Security Council should collectively help the country to overcome its current predicament by supporting the revival of its political process, safeguarding its stability, assisting its efforts to address humanitarian and economic challenges, said Sun.

"The international community and the United Nations should offer constructive support to Libya on the basis of respecting its sovereignty and dominance," said Sun.

Sun said that the United Nations should closely follow the implementation of the ceasefire agreement, further promote coordination and integration of military and security institutions in both east and west Libya and facilitate the withdrawal of foreign mercenaries and combatants from Libyan territory.

He also called on the UN to continue to remain vigilant against the spillover effect of the Sudan conflict on Libya and assist the country in effectively managing refugee inflows.

China is willing to work with the international community and continue to make unremitting efforts for Libya to achieve long-term stability, development and prosperity, said Sun.
