UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has hailed Chinese President Xi Jinping as "a man with a clear strategic vision", citing China's visionary decisions to develop renewable energy and electric cars.

In an interview with the China Media Group on the sidelines of the ongoing Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Tianjin from Sunday to Monday, Guterres said Xi has always viewed things from a long-term perspective, and the objectives set by him can be achieved as anticipated.

"If I would have to choose one aspect that, in my opinion, characterizes President Xi Jinping, it's that he is a man with a clear strategic vision, able to look at the long term, to define objectives for this long term, and not only to reach them, but to reach them in anticipation. We can give several examples. I remember President Xi Jinping announced that China would reach 1,200 gigawatts of renewable energy in 2030. It's already done," said Guterres.

"At the same time, when many were still thinking and how to make diesel cars more perfect, China made a decision to bet on electric cars many years in advance, and so develop all the technologies that were necessary. And today we have Chinese electric cars dominating the market everywhere in the world and functioning extremely well," he said.

"So in a world where so many things are decided one day, and then changed the next day, and policies enable to have the minimum of sustainability, I think this strategic vision is a very important characteristic. And I believe that it corresponds exactly to President Xi Jinping," said the UN chief.

Guterres arrived in Beijing on Saturday morning to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit 2025, scheduled to be held from August 31 to September 1 in the northern Chinese port city of Tianjin.
