Ethnic communities in Xinjiang see rising incomes, improved services under CPC leadership

People of all ethnic groups across Xinjiang are enjoying better livelihoods, rising incomes, and improved public services, as the region benefits from sustained social stability under the Communist Party of China's (CPC) governance in the new era.

The CPC Central Committee has long prioritized Xinjiang in national governance, a commitment underscored by General Secretary Xi Jinping's multiple visits to the region.

At the third central meeting on Xinjiang work in September 2020, Xi introduced the CPC's new-era guidelines for governing the region. These include governing Xinjiang according to law, strengthening persistent efforts to combat terrorism, and maintaining stability through ethnic unity.

To achieve lasting unity, the guidelines emphasize rallying public support and fostering a shared sense of the Chinese nation as one community as strengthening cultural identity requires deeper recognition of Chinese culture across ethnic groups.

The strategy also calls for harnessing Xinjiang's geographic, resource, and policy advantages to drive high-quality development. Long-term prosperity, the CPC asserts, depends on upholding Party leadership and maintaining a stable, inclusive environment.

Xinjiang was once one of the poorest regions in China. Thanks to the poverty alleviation campaign, it lifted 3.06 million rural residents out of poverty by 2020, joining the rest of the country in building a moderately prosperous society in all respects.

The region's GDP increased from 750 billion yuan (about 105 billion U.S. dollars) in 2012 to 2.05 trillion yuan in 2024, with an annual growth rate of seven percent at constant prices. The average life expectancy of residents rose from 30 years in 1949 to 77 years in 2024.

Today, Xinjiang is enjoying the most prosperous period in its history. In the process of Chinese modernization, people of all ethnic groups are more confident and determined than ever as they work together to build a beautiful Xinjiang that is united, harmonious, prosperous and culturally rich, with healthy ecosystems and a population living and working in contentment.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's official visit to China signals a policy shift towards building a more pragmatic relationship between the two countries, according to a Canadian researcher.

Carney arrived in Beijing on Wednesday to begin an official visit to China through Saturday, which marks the first trip by a Canadian Prime Minister to the country in eight years.

Robert Hanlon, director and principal investigator of Canada and the Asia Pacific Policy Project (CAPPP) at Thompson Rivers University in British Columbia, told the China Global Television Network (CGTN) that Carney's visit indicates Canada is recalibrating its strategic perception of China, which could cement the foundation for the country's economic diversification efforts and boost the development of bilateral cooperation.

"I think it's a clear message that he has moved Canada's strategy to a much more pragmatic, interest-based, -focused relationship with our trading partners, moving away from values-based narratives that we might have heard on previous governments. Canada has spoken about moving from what the Prime Minister's Office is calling "from reliance to resilience", and that means diversifying our economies and our trade everywhere in the world. And so China being our second largest trading partner, it makes perfect sense for our PM to head to Beijing," he said.

The scholar also noted the huge cooperation potential between the two sides in economic and trade fields, citing Canada's efforts to step up shipments of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and the planned construction of an oil pipeline in Alberta which aims to increase export access to Asian markets. "Canada and China both share tremendous economic opportunities together and so finding ways to enhance our exports. Canada specifically looking to build out its LNG and oil, kind of export market. We know Canada is a major producer of critical minerals and China is a buyer. And so there's a lot of synergy between that kind of those kind of markets," he said.
