The future of Taiwan and the safety and wellbeing of the Taiwanese compatriots lie in national reunification, National Defense Ministry spokesman Zhang Xiaogang said at a press conference in Beijing on Thursday.

The spokesman made the remarks when asked to comment on the significant attention showed by various media outlets and the public in Taiwan to the Sept 3. military parade in Beijing, as well as on survey results which show increasingly improved sentiment of Taiwan's youth toward the mainland.

"Taiwan is an inalienable part of the Chinese territory. Compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to the Chinese nation and have always been one family. The 14-year arduous War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression witnessed the shared resistance against foreign aggression and the recovery of Taiwan by compatriots on both sides, a great victory for all Chinese people. Our solemn commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War was intended to remember history, honor the martyrs, cherish peace and create a bright future," Zhang said.

"The future of Taiwan, the safety and well-being of the Taiwanese compatriots lie in national reunification. We hope our compatriots in Taiwan will recognize the situation, follow the trend of the times, and join hands with fellow compatriots in the mainland in carrying forward the great national spirit and spirit of the War of Resistance, strengthening the national confidence as proud Chinese, firmly opposing Taiwan separatist activities and external interference, and jointly creating a bright future for national rejuvenation," said the spokesman.
