Achieving peaceful reunification at an early date will open up significant opportunities for Taiwan's economic and social development and bring tangible benefits to the Taiwan compatriots, said Zhang Han, spokeswoman for the Taiwan Affairs Office, on Wednesday.
Zhang made the statement at a press conference in Beijing after Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council said that the recent mainland proposals to help build a round-the-island high-speed railway and east-west highways in the wake of peaceful reunification, which were introduced in a previous Taiwan Affairs Office press conference, hold limited appeal for Taiwan society.
"All efforts we've made to advance cross-Strait relations are aimed at strengthening bonds between the compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait and meeting their expectations for a better life. National reunification is an irreversible historical trend. Peaceful reunification will create broad opportunities for Taiwan's economic and social development and deliver tangible benefits to the Taiwan compatriots, which are the most significant appeals. The earlier it is achieved, the more it will contribute to Taiwan's growth and to improving the livelihood of the Taiwan compatriots," Zhang.
"The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities, by stubbornly seeking secession and resisting reunification for their selfish political gains, can only deprive the public in Taiwan of the right to pursue a better life. We hope that the compatriots in Taiwan can take part in the just cause of advancing national reunification and work together to build a better future for our shared homeland," she said.
