The stability of China-U.S. relations concerns not only the well-being of the two peoples, but also the stability in the Asia-Pacific and world peace, said Meng Xiangqing, head of the Chinese People's Liberation Army expert delegation to the Shangri-La Dialogue 2026 on Saturday.
Meng, also a professor at China's National Defense University, made the remarks on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue, held annually in Singapore.
"At the first plenary session of the Dialogue, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth mentioned in his speech the recent meeting between the Chinese and U.S. heads of state in Beijing and the consensus they reached. There was also lively on-site interaction after the speech. From the atmosphere in the hall, the questions asked, and the overall response, it was clear that the leaders' meeting has drawn great interest here at the Shangri-La Dialogue. This further demonstrates the importance of China-U.S. relations. Whether this relationship remains stable matters not only to the people of both countries, but also to regional stability and world peace," Meng said.
"We hope China and the United States can work in the same direction, faithfully implement the consensus reached by the two heads of state, and promote the development of relations between our two militaries along a healthy, stable, and sustainable path," he added.
Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump held talks in Beijing on May 14. They agreed on a new vision of building "a constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability" during their meeting, charting a new course for the future development of China-U.S. relations and injecting greater stability and certainty into a turbulent and changing world.
