The United Nations is deeply alarmed by the escalation in situation in Lebanon, said Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday.
Dujarric told a press conference that the escalation in military activities across southern Lebanon and beyond has further exacerbated security and humanitarian pressures in the country.
Israeli warnings of strikes on Beirut's southern suburbs on Monday have heightened fear and uncertainty among the population in Lebanon, he said.
Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres:
"We reiterate that civilians and civilian infrastructures must not be targeted. We urge all actors to respect the cessation of hostilities and avoid further escalation. We condemn all the loss of civilian lives," said Dujarric.
The spokesperson called for the protection of civilian infrastructure in line with international humanitarian law.
He also warned that more people in Lebanon are likely to be forcibly displaced if the uncertainties continue.
The UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert continues to engage all parties to de-escalate tensions, Dujarric said.
