Two key connecting tunnels have been bored through at Lezhi Railway Station in southwest China's Sichuan Province, marking a major step forward for high-speed rail network integration in the region.
The downward Songjiawan tunnel and the upward Pujiagou tunnel were both bored through on Sunday at Lezhi Station, a newly built hub that serves as the only connection point between the Chengdu-Chongqing Middle Line high-speed railway and the Chengdu-Dazhou-Wanzhou high-speed railway.
The two tunnels link the main lines toward Chengdu and Chongqing respectively, enabling cross-line train operations and turnaround services.
Both railways are important parts of China's high-speed rail network featuring eight vertical and eight horizontal main routes.
Their integration at Lezhi will improve railway efficiency in southwest China and promote deeper integration between the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle and the national high-speed rail network.
Track laying and station construction are currently progressing steadily. The full connection is expected to be completed by 2027.
