A new 50,000-ton specialty polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) resin plant was put into operation on Monday at Sinopec Chongqing SVW Chemical Co., Ltd. in southwest China, lifting the company's annual production capacity to 210,000 tons and making it the world's largest single-site production base for high-end PVA, China Petrochemical Corporation (Sinopec) announced on Monday.
Known as the "universal additive" in fine chemicals, PVA boasts high strength, high light transmittance, strong barrier properties and full biodegradability, serving a wide range of sectors including textiles, construction, pharmaceuticals, new energy and electronics.
For years, however, China's high-end specialty PVA products such as optical-film-grade and pharmaceutical-grade variants relied heavily on imports, representing a critical supply gap at the upper end of the industrial chain.
Built entirely with domestically developed core technologies, the newly launched facility not only enables large-scale, stable production of high-end specialty grades but also drives process upgrades and capacity optimization across the company's existing 160,000-ton assets, together forming a 210,000-ton high-end PVA production system.
The leap in efficiency and product quality is underpinned by homegrown innovations across the production process.
"We innovated and optimized the polymerization process and adopted self-developed alcoholysis and precision purification technologies, boosting overall production efficiency by 40 percent and achieving high-end, intelligent and green operations across the entire process. All indicators of the mass-produced products benchmark against top international standards, filling both the technological void and the capacity gap in domestic high-end fine chemical materials," said Yang Kun, manager of the dispatch center at Sinopec Chongqing SVW Chemical Co., Ltd.
As one of the most widely used water-soluble polymer materials, PVA spans the full spectrum from consumer goods to high-end manufacturing.
In civilian applications, it serves as a moisturizing agent in cosmetics, a pharmaceutical sustained-release excipient, and a raw material for biodegradable water-soluble films used in laundry and eco-friendly packaging. Industrially, it enhances the strength and toughness of safety glass for automobiles and rail transit, making it an essential supporting material for numerous basic industries.
While demand from traditional fields such as textiles and construction has remained steady in recent years, fast-growing emerging sectors, including photovoltaic encapsulation films, optical polarizers, electronic-grade high-purity materials and degradable green packaging, have driven a continuous surge in demand for high-purity, customized high-end PVA, with the supply shortfall becoming particularly acute.
The expanded product lineup now allows the company to serve both conventional and cutting-edge markets simultaneously.
"Our PVA products have expanded from a single category to hundreds of refined, differentiated models, fully covering general industrial scenarios as well as high-end markets such as photovoltaics, optical films, electronic information and green packaging. With an annual capacity that ensures supply for both ordinary sectors and import substitution of high-end materials, the base effectively reduces the industrial chain's reliance on foreign supplies and strengthens the autonomy and controllability of supply chains,” said Li Bin, manager of the sales center at Sinopec Chongqing SVW Chemical Co., Ltd.
China has built the world's largest PVA industrial system, accounting for more than 60 percent of global total capacity. The launch of the Chongqing high-end production base further secures upstream raw material supplies for strategic emerging industries including new energy and optoelectronic displays.
