China plans to modernize its ecological supervision system by using advanced technologies, an official said Thursday.
At a press conference held in Beijing, Dong Baotong, vice minister of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, briefed media on the ministry's goals for the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030).
During this period, the ministry will conduct routine and standardized ecological assessments nationwide, across key regions, and in nature reserves to grasp baseline conditions and evolutionary trends, while evaluating the effectiveness of ecological protection and restoration.
Meanwhile, it will make identification and handling of ecological damage targeted, refine classification and determination system for ecological damage events, establish standardized full-process management, and digitalize ecological monitoring and regulation.
"We will increase the application of new technologies, such as satellite remote sensing, AI-based image interpretation, environmental DNA, voiceprint recognition, and large-model intelligent agents. We have an ecological protection and restoration supervision platform and need to promote its further iteration and upgrading. We will also continue to optimize the layout of ecosystem monitoring stations and plots, strengthening our ability to improve ecological quality and monitor biodiversity. In conclusion, we need to use technology to empower and promote the modernization of ecological supervision," said Dong.
