The high-mountain wheat crops in many parts of northwest China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region have ripened and entered the peak harvest season, prompting local authorities to seize the fine weather window and scientifically allocate agricultural machinery to accelerate the harvest progress.

In Jimsar County of the Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture, large combine harvesters are seen shuttling through the wheat fields, completing harvesting and threshing in a single operation.

The local wheat-growing areas are all at an altitude of about 1,700 meters, benefiting from abundant sunshine and a wide gap between day and night temperatures. This helps produce grains with high quality.

In Tekes County of the Ili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture, more than 80,000 mu (about 5,333 hectares) of wheat crops are now entering the harvest season, with most wheat grown in mountainous areas.

The local government has coordinated the deployment of agricultural machinery suitable for mountainous terrain, including combine harvesters and high-horsepower tractors, and is making the most of the favorable weather conditions to accelerate the harvest.

"This year I've planted 1,000 mu (about 67 hectares) of wheat, with a yield of about 450 kg per mu (6,750 kg per hectare). The yield is quite good," said Ma Yulong, a local farmer.

Nearly 10,000 young competitors from China, Bulgaria, South Africa, and other countries gathered in central China for the two-day 2025-2026 Invention Convention China (ICC) National Finals that opened Saturday.

Held in Zhengzhou City, Henan Province, the competition strived to "inspire the future" by involving young people from around the world in sci-tech innovation and building a platform for cross-border exchange.

This year, competition categories aligned with 10 sustainable development-focused directions, including low-carbon future, biodiversity protection, artificial intelligence and daily life, and food security.

Competitors set up booths to showcase their inventions and learn from each others' creativity. Among the highlights was a robotic book page-turner.

Excellent young inventors were also honored on stage at the event.
