U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that Iran must be prevented from developing nuclear weapons while also stressing that the Strait of Hormuz is U.S. territory.
Speaking at a rally in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Trump added that Iran is very eager to reach a deal. However, he said, "We don't even know if we want [a deal] because I view the Strait of Hormuz as an American territory right now, it's an American territory."
On June 18, the United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on ending the war in the region on all fronts, including Lebanon. Under the MoU, they were scheduled to hold negotiations within a period of 60 days, which ended on Monday, to reach a final agreement, but the talks' fate remains unclear following the escalation between the two countries last month.
