Rescue forces have been deployed in Ningming County, south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, where typhoon-triggered heavy rainfall caused flooding in the Mingjiang River and its tributaries on Sunday.
Floodwaters have swept through streets, cut off communities and left debris piled along the river in Ningming County, one of the areas hardest hit by Typhoon Narra, the 19th of the year.
Days of torrential rains have pushed river levels sharply higher, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate from their homes. Rescue teams are trying to reach communities cut off by flooded roads and disrupted communications.
"We're doing everything we can to search for and evacuate residents. So far, 19,163 people have been relocated across the county. Rescue teams are reaching those communities by boat and on foot to make sure no household and no one is left behind," said Kuang Rongtao, executive deputy head of Ningming County.
He said the Chongzuo-Aidian Expressway, one of the main routes into Ningming, has reopened after sections were temporarily closed by the flooding.
Official figures showed the disaster has affected about 61,000 people in six cities across Guangxi as of Sunday evening. Around 54,000 people have been relocated, as firefighters and emergency crews continued rescue and drainage operations.
Authorities have activated a Level-IV disaster relief response and allocated 50 million yuan (about 7.44 million U.S. dollars) for emergency repairs to damaged roads, water facilities and other public infrastructure.
