Kyrgyz observers expect Xi’s visit to further deepen China-Kyrgyzstan cooperation

Kyrgyz officials and experts expect that Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to Kyrgyzstan will further boost cooperation in various fields and bring benefits to both countries.

Xi arrived in Bishkek, the capital city of Kyrgyzstan, on Sunday afternoon for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit 2026 and a state visit to Kyrgyzstan at the invitation of Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov.

Experts believe that under the leadership of the two heads of states, both countries will deepen strategic mutual trust, expand mutually beneficial cooperation, carry forward the traditional friendship, and elevate the China-Kyrgyzstan comprehensive strategic partnership for a new era to a new level.

"It is of great historical significance. We anticipate signing major cooperative agreements, which will for sure bring benefits to both countries," said Erlist Akunbekov, deputy chairman of Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan.

They also think that the visit is of great strategic importance to the development of bilateral relations in the years to come, which will inject strong impetus into the all-round cooperation, and make new contributions to regional stability and development.

"I hope that President Xi's visit will further promote bilateral educational collaboration. For now, the educational and cultural cooperation between China and Kyrgyzstan is on the fast track. Take the Kyrgyz-Chinese Research Institute as an example, more than 50 students go to study in China every year," said Sofya Apaeva, director of the Kyrgyz-Chinese Research Institute.

"I think Kyrgyzstan and China will continue to work side by side in the future. We can make use of China's economic potentials, and China can benefit from our development opportunities. Currently, the world's center is shifting to the Global South. As a recognized leader in many fields, China will bring tremendous development chances not only to Kyrgyzstan but also to Central Asia and Eurasia," said Temir Sariyev, president of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Kyrgyz Republic.

The devastating flash floods that struck Nepal's border region on Wednesday have left buildings in ruins, roads shattered, and the Trishuli River swollen in the worst-hit Rasuwa district.

About 50 kilometers from the China-Nepal border port, a small town in Rasuwa has suffered extensive damage to buildings, including a post office that was completely destroyed. Several cars were seen stuck in the mud.

The road linking the town to the border port -- a key trade route between Nepal and China and a vital passage for rescuers heading into hard-hit areas including Rasuwa -- has been completely washed away by the flash floods.

Repair work is underway, with approximately 150 meters of the road already reopened to traffic.

The mudslides have caused heavy casualties and widespread infrastructure damage.

Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said that 734 bodies had been recovered from mudslide-hit areas as of 9 a.m. local time on Sunday, with 2,498 people still missing.
