U.S. President Donald Trump has vowed to retaliate against Iran after Iran fired missiles at a U.S. military base in Jordan, as the U.S. side considers limited strikes in the Strait of Hormuz to curb Iranian military capabilities.
"We're going to hit them hard. There will be a response," Trump told Fox News on Monday, following Sunday's missile attack on U.S. forces in Jordan.
The president said U.S. forces allowed one Iranian missile to pass through air defenses overnight after determining it would not hit anything, while the other incoming missiles were intercepted.
According to U.S. officials cited by Axios, Trump and his senior aides have been weighing the option of launching limited strikes in the Strait of Hormuz to prevent Iran from rebuilding radar and missile capabilities used to target vessels.
The plan, drafted by U.S. Central Command over the past week and backed by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, has not yet received presidential approval, the officials said. Its objective is to reduce the risk of Iranian attacks on oil tankers and U.S. military assets.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Monday that U.S. economic pressure and naval blockade against Iran would push Iran toward negotiations. The goal is to create conditions that bring Iran to the negotiating table, Bessent said, adding that Iran must abandon its nuclear program and keep the Strait of Hormuz open.
In a social media post on Monday night, Trump called Iran a "failed nation" that was "in total disarray," with no navy, no air force and inflation at 300 percent. He also accused Iran of killing protesters, without providing evidence.
