China's warehousing index rose to 49.7 percent in September, up 1.2 percentage points from August, as demand improved across the warehousing market and the industry showed signs of recovery, the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing said Wednesday.
The business volume index climbed 5.5 percentage points from August to 52.8 percent, while the facility utilization index jumped 6.8 percentage points to 51.4 percent, both returning to expansion territory.
A reading above 50 percent indicates expansion, while one below 50 percent reflects contraction.
The rebound came as warehousing demand, which had been suppressed by weather conditions and the off season, recovered steadily.
Coupled with the accelerated progress of infrastructure and major engineering projects, there has been a notable rebound in the volume of warehousing services for bulk commodities such as steel, chemical products, and mineral products.
The charging price index rose 3.2 percentage points from last month to 50.5 percent in September, moving back into expansion, as recovering business volumes pushed up warehousing fees and eased operating pressure on the sector.
The index for new orders gained 1.3 percentage points compared with the August figure, reaching 50.9 percent in September.
The business expectations index came in at 56 percent in September -- up 2.8 percentage points from the August reading.
Improved demand in the manufacturing sector and the continued peak season for traditional production and construction have supported the release of new demand for warehousing. The industry experienced fluctuations in the third quarter but showed a recovering trend by the end of the quarter.
"Looking ahead, the traditional peak season for production and construction is expected to continue. With policies such as equipment upgrades and consumer goods trade-in programs continuing to be implemented, major projects and infrastructure construction accelerating, and the arrival of the autumn and winter peak consumption season, demand for warehousing services will continue improving, and the industry is projected to maintain a stable and positive trend," said He Hui, vice president of the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing.
