萬基國家公園(Hwange National Park)和野生動物管理局發言人法拉沃(Tinashe Farawo)表示:「厄爾尼諾現象讓本已嚴峻的情況變得更加糟糕。」

氣象部門預測,津巴布韋部分地區之後的雨量稀少且氣溫持續上升,可能會造成更多的大象死亡。當局擔心2019年的情況會重演,當時萬基國家公園有200多頭大象死於嚴重乾旱。公園大約有4萬5000頭大象,以及100多種其他哺乳動物和400種鳥類。
厄爾尼諾現象是一種自然且反覆出現的氣候現象,能讓太平洋部分地區變暖,進而影響世界各地的天氣模式。雖然今年的厄爾尼諾現象最近為東非帶來致命的洪水,但預計整個南部非洲的降雨量仍將低於平均值。
