Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated on Saturday that the country must actively pursue new trade relationships outside the United States, acknowledging that its heavy dependence on its southern neighbor has become a strategic vulnerability.

Speaking at the Global Progress Action Summit in Toronto, Carney noted that while Canada has long profited from close economic ties with the U.S., recent sweeping shifts in American policy have turned many of Canada's traditional advantages into vulnerabilities.

Currently, Canada needs to seek new trade partners outside the U.S. to break its dependence on the U.S.-Canada trade relationship and increase its trade resilience, Carney noted.
