China's combined installed capacity of wind and solar power surpassed that of thermal power for the first time during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021–2025), while its nuclear and biomass energy sectors also reached world-leading levels, according to a newly released 2026 energy industry report.
The report, released by the China Enterprise Reform and Development Society on Sunday, highlighted the dual-track progress in ensuring a safe energy supply and in green, low-carbon transformation. In 2025, investment in key national energy projects exceeded 3.5 trillion yuan (about 520 billion U.S. dollars) for the first time, a year-on-year increase of nearly 11 percent.
Between 2020 and 2025, the installed capacity of wind and solar surged from 530 million to 1.84 billion kilowatts. China maintained the world's largest operational nuclear fleet, and for seven consecutive years ranked first globally in installed biomass power generation.
On the fossil energy side, raw coal accounted for about 65 percent of primary energy production, with China building the world's largest clean coal-fired power supply system. Oil and gas supply capacity also grew steadily, with crude oil production holding at 200 million tons for four straight years and natural gas output rising by over 10 billion cubic meters annually for nine consecutive years.
Looking ahead, the report said China's energy sector will vigorously promote the integration of artificial intelligence and energy to power the construction of a modern new energy system that is clean, low-carbon, safe, and efficient.

A delegation of foreign diplomatic envoys visited south China's Hainan from Wednesday to Saturday, learning about the province's rapid development and exploring potential areas of cooperation.
The trip, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, brought together over 30 ambassadors, chargés d'affaires, representatives of international organizations, and senior diplomats from countries including Kenya, Serbia, Spain and Vietnam.
In Sanya's Yazhou Bay Science and Technology City, the delegates gained insights into China's independent innovation in the seed industry and the country's agricultural technological transformation in response to climate change.
"We can invite a lot of the persons from this institute to come to Dominica to teach us some of the advanced technologies and the practices that we should employ in agriculture," said Martin Charles, Dominica's Ambassador to China.
The delegates also toured the innovative drug and medical device exhibition, as well as health and wellness institutions in the Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone.
Hailed as China's sole "medical special zone", the pilot zone is home to over 30 top-tier domestic and international medical institutions.
"The medical advances are the ones that have struck me most for the moment. There are so many fields where we can cooperate," said Javier Garcia-Larrache, Spain's charge d'affaires ad interim in China.
The delegates also visited villages to experience folk culture, including Li brocade from the Li ethnic group, traditional Chinese medicine sachets, and bamboo pole dances, immersing themselves in the province's rich and vibrant local cultures.
