China's 2026 box office crossed the 27-billion-yuan (over four-billion-U.S.-dollar) mark as of Saturday night, driven largely by a dazzling lineup of summer hits that have broken multiple records and drawn audiences back to theaters in droves.

The summer movie season, which began on June 1, has seen 43 consecutive days with daily box office revenues surpassing 100 million yuan (14.9 million U.S. dollars), while both attendance and screening numbers have hit historic highs.

Among the cinema sensations is "Once Upon a Time in the Middle East," which has already grossed over 1.5 billion yuan (223 million U.S. dollars) since its debut on August 11. Set in a war-torn Middle Eastern city, the film follows a Chinese cook who travels abroad in search of a better life. It scored 9.9 on Taopiaopiao during its preview screenings, the highest-rated in the past three years.

Over 100 Chinese and foreign films are scheduled to hit theaters during the three-month stretch, offering moviegoers a wide variety of genres. Leading the chart are sports comedy film "Kung Fu Soccer" and animated fantasy "All Wishes Come True," raking in 2.3 billion yuan (342 million U.S. dollars) and 1.7 billion yuan (253 million U.S. dollars) respectively.

Several homegrown productions have also made waves in international markets, including "Dear You" and "All Wishes Come True".

"Dear You," a Chaoshan (Teochew)-dialect film, tells a moving story of homesickness and family ties among overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia. It has earned over 100 million yuan (14.9 million U.S. dollars) at the overseas box office after gaining strong word-of-mouth popularity in Chinese mainland.

"All Wishes Come True," which draws inspiration from the traditional Chinese legends, has been released across North America, Southeast Asia, Australia, and Europe, and has topped the charts among Chinese-language films in multiple countries.

So far this year, Chinese films' overseas box office revenue has surpassed 450 million yuan (67 million U.S. dollars). Across diverse genres, these films have connected with global audiences through authentic storytelling, cultural depth, and universal values.

The summer film frenzy has extended beyond the big screen, turning once-quiet filming locations into sought-after travel destinations.

Iranian Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad said Sunday the country has discovered more than 7.5 trillion cubic feet (21.24 billion cubic meters) of gas reserves in a field in the southern Fars province.

Nearly 5.7 trillion cubic feet of gas can be extracted from the field, considering a recovery factor of about 72 to 73 percent, Paknejad said in an interview with state-run IRIB TV.

"The newly-discovered resources add tens of billions of dollars to the intrinsic value of the country's wealth," he said, adding the field also contains a significant amount of gas condensate reserves.

Iran holds nearly 34 trillion cubic meters of proven gas reserves, according to data by the Gas Exporting Countries Forum. After Russia, the country has the second-largest gas reserves in the world.
