In a fresh Israeli ground military operation in Gaza on Saturday, four women and one boy were killed when Israeli forces struck a residential apartment building in one of the quietest neighborhoods of western Gaza City.
Israel's continued military operations in the Gaza Strip have inflicted devastating civilian casualties. The United Nations says more than 73,000 Palestinians have been killed in the war-torn enclave and over 174,000 injured since October 2023. Children, women and the elderly have not been exempt from being targeted.
"We woke up to the sound of explosions, three missiles. We were terrified and in shock. We couldn't see anything. Children, women and the elderly were screaming. It was a state of absolute terror, terror in every sense of the word. It was the first time I truly felt what war means," said Maher Daher, a Palestinian eyewitness.
Nearly a year after a ceasefire went into effect, many residents of Gaza continue to experience the terror of living in a warzone.
"It is shocking and beyond comprehension. I don't know how to describe such brutality. Has it really come to the point where Israel directly targets women? It is an indescribable crime," said Ezzat Al-Sawafiri, owner of a targeted home.
